The Alandrea Country Living Journal
Welcome Home

Welcome to our little corner of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where life moves a little slower, gardens are always teaching us something new, old dogs still find joy in every walk, and every season has a story worth sharing.
From the Front Porch
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the very first edition of The Alandrea Country Living Journal.
For quite some time we've wanted a place where we could share more than just announcements about new books, handcrafted vanilla, or our latest YouTube videos. We wanted a place that felt more personal—a place where we could invite you into our lives and share the everyday moments that make this little homestead so special to us.
Life has a way of moving quickly. It's easy to rush from one task to the next without noticing the hummingbird outside the kitchen window, the first tomato ripening in the garden, or the quiet comfort of an evening walk with an old friend.
This journal is our way of slowing down.
Each month we'll share stories from around the homestead, introduce you to the animals who make us smile every day, explore the fascinating world of vanilla, give you a behind-the-scenes look at our books and videos, and hopefully leave you with a reminder to appreciate the simple moments that often become life's most treasured memories.
Whether you've been following us for years or you've only recently discovered Alandrea Country Living, we're truly grateful you're here. Thank you for spending a little time with us. Welcome to the family.
With gratitude,
Andrea & Alain
Meet Andrea & Alain
A few years ago, we found ourselves standing on a beautiful piece of land nestled in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. It wasn't perfect, and neither were we, but we could already imagine what it might become.
Today that dream is our home.
Our days are filled with gardens that are always teaching us patience, chickens and ducks that never fail to make us laugh, projects that don't always go according to plan, and two remarkable dogs who somehow became the heart of everything we create.
What started as a dream of building a simpler life gradually grew into something much bigger. It inspired children's books about kindness, courage, friendship, and resilience. It inspired handcrafted vanilla extracts made from beans sourced around the world. It inspired a YouTube channel where we document the journey of building our forever home.
Meet Duke & Toby
Duke is our English Black Labrador. Gentle, loyal, and endlessly curious, he believes every walk is worth taking and every new scent deserves investigating. As he's grown older, he's reminded us that slowing down isn't a bad thing—it often means noticing more.
Toby, our spirited Lhasa Apso, is Duke's complete opposite in all the best ways. He's always ready to investigate, convinced every squirrel is plotting something, and somehow manages to find excitement wherever he goes.
Together they've inspired an entire series of children's books celebrating friendship, kindness, perseverance, and the joy of doing life together. Beginning next month, you'll find a regular feature called Duke & Toby's Corner.
Take a Trip Around the World — Featured Vanilla: Madagascar & Kentucky Bourbon
Our Madagascar & Kentucky Bourbon extract is one of our favorites. Rich, creamy, and beautifully balanced, it brings together the familiar warmth of Madagascar vanilla with subtle notes of caramel and oak from Kentucky bourbon. It's wonderful in cookies, cakes, buttercream frosting, French toast, and homemade ice cream.
Behind the Camera
Our YouTube channel, Building Our Forever, follows the everyday moments that don't always make it into photographs or books. This month: 2 Dogs Living Their Best Lives — join Duke and Toby on one of their favorite summer adventures.
This Month's Reflection
"The best parts of life rarely make headlines. They happen in quiet gardens, around kitchen tables, on slow walks with faithful dogs, and in the simple moments we're willing to notice."
