Duke and Toby - Get a Little Brother

Duke and Toby Get a Little Brother is a gentle story about bringing home a new puppy, adjusting to an unfamiliar place, and giving someone the time and patience they need to feel safe. It is also a story about three dogs beginning a new life together on a busy Virginia farm.

Duke and Toby know something exciting is coming, but they have no idea what to expect.

When Andrea and Alan return home with Maverick, a little yellow Lab puppy, Toby is thrilled to have someone new to play with. Duke is excited too, but he quickly realizes that Maverick is frightened and unsure. He has been taken away from his mom, his sisters, and everything that has always felt familiar.

While Maverick learns the rules of the house, Duke and Toby begin learning how to be big brothers. Duke stays close when the puppy wakes during the night and misses his first family. Toby does his best to make him laugh and reminds everyone that he happens to be very good at being loved.

A few days later, Duke and Toby take Maverick outside to explore his new home. They introduce him to the garden, the chickens, ducks, geese, and goats, and finally bring him to the young tree planted in memory of a beloved family member. There, Maverick begins to understand that becoming part of a new family does not require him to forget the one he came from.
